Family law

• Alcohol & the family: a lawyer's perspective New Law Journal, May and June 1995. Based on a presentation at the Institute of Alcohol Studies in March 1995. So much has changed since then that much of this paper is mainly of historical interest. For an analysis of recent developments in the field of alcohol and family law see "The Role of the court in cases concerning parental substance abuse and children at risk of harm" by Judith Harwin and Mary Ryan, in the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law (vol 29 nos 3-4) September to December 2007.

Legal education

• Substance abuse - a legal subject? Proposes a classification of alcohol abuse in particular as a legal subject, and describes a recent experiment in 2001 in teaching the subject to lawyers using interactive methods

• Alcoholism in the legal profession  (with Deborah Brooke) New Law Journal, January 1996. A research study commissioned by the Law Society and the Solicitors' Indemnity Fund.

• Alcohol & depression in lawyer disciplinary proceedings  "Addiction", September 1994. Based on a presentation to the Annual Workshop of the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs in September 1993.
• Identifying the alcoholic lawyer  New Law Journal 18th December 1998
• Helping the alcoholic lawyer A discussion of how to identify fellow professionals who are addicted to alcohol or drugs, and how to help them to come to terms with their condition. A further article by Barry Pritchard on "Rehabilitating the Alcoholic Lawyer" is available on the LawCare website.
